Liverpool have been terrible this season, as summed up by last night’s 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa.

The Reds once again looked like they were on the back foot, but they pulled off a stunning victory. And now their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League are really on the line, although they have still managed to break through.

But these statistics will put a stark bleak light on Liverpool fans, and will only strengthen the growing belief that Arne Slott’s time as manager must be over…

  • Liverpool have lost 20 games in all competitions this season, tied for the most ever.
  • Liverpool conceded 52 goals in the league, the highest ever in a 38-game season.
  • Liverpool have lost seven and drawn one away game against top nine clubs this season.

Considering how much Liverpool spent on new signings such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirths after winning the Premier League last summer, this dramatic drop in form is quite unusual and should be a cause for major concern.

Qualifying for the Champions League is extremely important for Liverpool and they can qualify if they win against Brentford on the final day of the season.

However, Bournemouth and Brighton are mathematically still in the race, so they could lose their spot if the team in the slot drop points again in their last game. When they play this badly, a home game against Brentford can never be taken for granted.

Should Liverpool stick with Arne Slott?

Slott did a great job in his first season at Anfield, winning the Premier League title fairly easily and also reaching the final of the Carabao Cup.

While this may give the Dutch tactician a bit more time to prove he can turn things around, there could also be an argument that it reflects even worse on him to have taken his team so far back from a position that looked so strong.

It might also suggest that Slott has perhaps only benefited from taking over Jurgen Klopp’s team and taking advantage of unusually poor seasons from both Manchester City and Arsenal.

With the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz leaving the club and age catching up with Mohamed Salah, Slott appears unable to fully adapt to the transition and make his mark on the LFC team.

Ollie Watkins admits it was fun playing against Liverpool

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins made some pretty damning comments after the game, admitting Liverpool were disjointed at the back, admitting he enjoyed playing against Liverpool…

“They’re disjointed at the back and I feel like there’s a lot of space for me to run in. I’m going to get my chances against them,” the England international said.

These are not comments a top club would want to hear and it is vital that Slott raise standards as soon as possible or they will undoubtedly face serious pressure in the coming weeks and months.
