Liverpool may have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sign one of the greatest managers in football history.

Josep Guardiola is set to leave Manchester City at the end of this season, according to a report in the Daily Mail, opening the door for one of the most shocking managerial moves in Premier League history.

After a turbulent season under Arne Slott, Anfield is in desperate need of an upgrade, and there couldn’t be a more important time.

Josep Guardiola to leave Man City at the end of the season

Guardiola is expected to step down as Manchester City manager after this season’s final Premier League game, ending a remarkable 10-year spell at the Etihad Stadium during which he led the club to 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a historic Champions League triumph.

He made the decision several weeks ago, according to reports, and further changes are expected within the coaching staff, with several behind-the-scenes figures also set to leave as part of a wider transition.

A celebratory procession through Manchester to honor Guardiola’s extraordinary contribution to English football is planned for Monday, with players from the men’s national team, women’s team and academy set to join the outgoing manager in an open-top bus.

He arrived at Etihad Airways in 2016 and never looked back. His departure marks the end of perhaps the most dominant managerial era in English football history.

Liverpool should do everything in their power to convince Guardiola to replace Arne Slott

With Xabi Alonso already set to move to Chelsea, Liverpool are in urgent need of finding a long-term manager who can return the club to its former glory.

The signing of Guardiola represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity that Fenway Sports Group cannot afford to ignore.

Liverpool is a club with a global brand, world-class infrastructure and one of the most passionate fan bases in world football.

They also have a team that, with the right leadership, could compete for a title again in no time.

Mo Salah’s recent public call for a return to ‘heavy metal’ attacking football shows that the identity still exists and just needs the right manager. Who better than the guy who spent a decade figuring out how to stop it?

Josep Guardiola has already admitted his admiration for Liverpool

Guardiola’s respect for Liverpool is deep and well-documented. He once admitted that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were the toughest opposition he had ever faced as a manager, saying: “I have never had an opponent where I spent so many nights and afternoons with the coaching staff trying to figure out how to stop them.”

It’s the mark of a man who understands, respects and fears Liverpool at its best.

He has frequently praised the club’s DNA and its ability to fit in with the City side over the years. In April 2024, he said: “I respect Liverpool. No matter what happens this season, I respect Liverpool…a team that went head-to-head with us.”

A man who speaks of Liverpool with such admiration is not someone who views Anfield with indifference.

Will Pep Guardiola take the Liverpool job?

The obvious complication is the optics. Taking over City’s fiercest rivals in recent years would be one of the most controversial moves in football history, and Guardiola may be reluctant to tarnish his flawless legacy at the Etihad.

Reports suggest he may even remain at Manchester City in a different capacity despite leaving the dugout, but that doesn’t quite add up to the profile of a man ready to head straight to Anfield.

But football has surprised us before. Guardiola is believed to be keen for a challenge to match his ambitions, and Liverpool, with its history, stadium and identity that Salah has been passionately seeking to restore, could be just that challenge. It may be a long-term possibility. But for Liverpool, this is definitely a shot worth taking.
