Michael Carrick has been clear about what he wants from Manchester United’s midfield going forward, and his comments say a lot about the kind of team he is looking to build at Old Trafford.

Carrick told Sky Sports that United’s midfielders need more than just technical quality.

In his words, they must have “calmness, composure and positivity”, as well as “the stamina to deal with quick transitions” in the way the team wants to play.

“You need to be calm, collected and positive.”

“We need the stamina to deal with quick changes in the way we want to play and create excitement.” Reporter Fabrizio Romano told Sky Sports.

Michael Carrick ready for Man United comeback

Carrick is now United’s permanent head coach, having signed a contract until 2028 after a strong interim period that helped the club win Champions League football again.

Reuters described his influence as a “quiet revolution” and United have seen rapid growth since taking over in January.

Carrick’s comments are interesting. Because he sounds exactly like the midfielder he used to be. Calm, intelligent, methodical on the ball, but always thinking positively.

He wasn’t the loudest or flashiest player during his United career, but he understood rhythm, space and control like no other.

Now, as a manager, he clearly wants those qualities in his midfield.

United have had too many games in recent years where their midfield has been rushed, stretched out and easily bypassed.

Carrick is looking for a player who can receive the ball under pressure and still make good decisions.

That doesn’t mean delaying everything. In fact, his word “positive” is just as important.

He wants control, but he doesn’t want boring possessions. He wants a midfielder who can play up front, break the lines and create momentum.

Carrick has clear plans for next season

The physical aspect is also important. Carrick specifically mentioned quick transitions, which is a big clue as to his tactical plans.

United are not going to be a slow, passive possession team. We need players who can adapt to the speed of the Premier League, recover quickly when they lose the ball, and attack with energy when they regain it.

This explains why United have been linked with midfielders such as Elliott Anderson and Sandro Tonali.

Clubs are looking for players who have both technical safety and athletic ability.

This has become even more important with Casemiro’s departure. United need a midfield that can compete physically without losing control of the ball.

Carrick knows what a United midfielder should look like and now has the opportunity to build such an engine room himself.
