Manchester United’s summer midfield rebuild could be very ambitious, with Real Madrid star Aurélien Choameny reportedly seen as a ‘dream’ signing at Old Trafford.
Fabrizio Romano says United have great admiration for the French midfielder and believe he can provide a transformative influence similar to that of Casemiro, who first arrived from Real Madrid.
The problem, of course, is the price. Signing Choameni is likely to cost more than €100m, making the situation extremely difficult even for a club with Manchester United’s resources.
It’s easy to see why United like Choameni so much. He is powerful, calm, tactically smart and has already gained experience at the highest level with Real Madrid and France.
He plays as a defensive midfielder and can step into a box-to-box role, breaking up the attack and contributing to controlling the tempo of the match.
Man United are considering signing French midfielder
In short, he is exactly the kind of midfielder United were looking for.
There are also comparisons with Casemiro. When Casemiro joined United, he immediately gave them authority, leadership and defensive security.
United now appear to believe that Choameni can provide the same effect in a younger, more long-term version.
With Casemiro gone, United’s midfield clearly needs a new leader and a suitable physical presence.
But the situation is not just about superstar contracts. Koby Mainu’s comeback changed the whole picture.
The Athletic report that Mainu turned down a £40m move to Chelsea last summer after struggling under manager Ruben Amorim.
The decision now looks momentous as the 21-year-old has been reborn under Carrick and is once again seen as a key figure in United’s future.
Carrick wants Mainu midfield partner
Carrick’s confidence clearly helped him. United’s official website recently highlighted that the manager is carefully looking for a midfielder who can complement Mainu, rather than simply replacing the midfielder the club already has.
This is an important detail because it suggests United are looking to build a balanced midfield, rather than just buying a name.
That’s where Choameni’s idea becomes so appealing. A midfield built around Mainu, Bruno Fernandes and Choameni will suddenly look more serious.
Mainu will be able to play more freely, Bruno will be more creative and Choameni will give the team power and defense.
United should definitely explore Choameni, but don’t let one expensive target dominate the entire summer. If this deal is possible, their midfield could be completely transformed.
