        • Rangers’ Danny Rolle advances approach to sign former Sheffield Wednesday star
  • Rangers face threat from Man City in race to sign Pierce Charles
        • Shankland will love him: Rangers move towards ‘Bukayo Saka Regen’ deal

Rangers are preparing for a major summer rebuild after a frustrating season in the Scottish Premiership title race, with reinforcements now seen as one of the club’s biggest priorities.

Rangers continued to perform well under manager Danny Rolle, but once again fell short against old rivals Celtic.

There were some positive moments during the season, especially after returning to the three-way race for this year’s crown, but ultimately the instability at home proved costly as they moved further away from title contention.

That makes the upcoming transfer window even more important, with Rangers expected to target proven players who can immediately upgrade their first-team squad.

The Gers boss is very enthusiastic.

Goalkeeper is one position that is under close consideration, particularly as clubs consider their long-term plans between the posts.

Rangers face threat from Man City in race to sign Pierce Charles

Now, according to talkSPORT’s latest transfer notes via journalist Alex Crook, Rangers are among the clubs in contention to sign Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pearce Charles.

Man City are also set to join the race for a contract, having previously considered bringing the 20-year-old back to the Etihad after releasing him from their academy system.

Charles has emerged as one of the most highly rated young goalkeepers outside the Premier League over the past year.

The Northern Ireland international has impressed with both his shot-stopping and composure in possession and has attracted attention from clubs across the UK despite Sheffield Wednesday’s difficult season.

Manchester-born Charles spent time in City’s academy before joining Sheffield Wednesday in 2020. Since then, his growth has accelerated rapidly.

He has already gained senior international experience with Northern Ireland and is now widely regarded as one of the brightest young goalkeepers in the EFL.

The Rangers’ interest is not surprising at all.

The club is increasingly looking to sign young players with resale potential, but Rohr is believed to want competition and depth across the squad ahead of next season.

Charles would fit perfectly into that recruiting model given his age, experience level, and long-term upside.

However, if City decide to make a serious move on him, Rangers could face an uphill battle to complete the deal.

City are reportedly considering a reunion due to uncertainty over James Trafford’s future. The Premier League runners-up are rumored to already view Charles as a possible long-term option, given his understanding of the club’s academy structure and playing style.

It forces players to make complex decisions for themselves.

A return to City would bring prestige and elite-level facilities, but breaking into the first-team system is notoriously difficult for young goalkeepers.

In contrast, Rangers could offer regular senior football and a clearer route into European competition.

Charles already has experience dealing with pressure environments.

Despite Wednesday’s struggles, he continued to win praise for his mature performance and composed distribution from the back. His reputation has steadily increased over the season, with interest from multiple clubs reflecting that.

For the Rangers, pursuing Charles is another sign that they may need long-term team building, not just short-term fixes, this summer as well.

Having once again fallen short in the title race, the club knows they need to improve in several areas if they are to close the gap on Celtic next season.
