ENIC has now handed an ultimatum to one Tottenham Hotspur player, with even the safety of the Premier League potentially not being enough to keep certain stars around.
The majority of Spurs fans will be just relieved that they are now a Premier League team. It was too close for comfort until Roberto de Zerbi arrived. The Italian therefore deserves a lot of credit for cheering up a team that was crumbling on the final day and pulling them to safety.
Tottenham surge forward in failed race to sign Manchester United for just £10m
Spurs are keen to sign the ‘incredible’ player.
But while relief is the predominant emotion, there is also a sense of urgency that another season of flirting with relegation could lead to an unwanted schedule in the Championship. That’s why this summer is the most important in Tottenham’s history.
In that regard, it appears that a large number of arrivals may have already arrived. Andy Robertson appears to be on the road after an emotional farewell to Liverpool at the end of the season, with the Lilywhites’ top-flight status intact.
Sadly, it’s not just new players that clubs have to worry about. Premier League table or not, they still have to convince some of their big stars to stay.
According to Spain’s AS, ENIC want Pedro Polo to sign a new contract or they will attract interest from Man City this summer and make a cash signing. It’s all or nothing for the right-back as far as Spurs are concerned after City initiated contact for his signature.
Lilywhite did her part. His current contract is set to expire in 2028 and they have offered the Spaniard a new contract. However, it remains to be seen whether that will be enough to lure him away from Man City’s clutches.
Tottenham should not stand in front of Polo
It may sound controversial, but Tottenham should allow Polo to leave when the time comes. In terms of quality, the right-back is up there with the best players, but if he’s unhappy that quality won’t come through and that’s probably the last thing De Zerbi needs.
The Lilywhites are in need of a major rebuild, which is impossible with loose parts. By cashing in on polo, they can invest in players who want to take the club forward and who support De Zerbi’s style. Only then may success come.
One look at the current team reveals discipline issues. Captain Cristian Romero almost missed the final day of the season after visiting his former club in Argentina. That’s all there is to the point. De Zerbi will have to reset from top to bottom, but if that means allowing players to leave, so be it.
