Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United is once again in doubt after it was reported in Italy that he has been offered to join Inter Milan.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter manager Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio have received calls from agents and intermediaries as they consider their defensive options for next season, and Maguire’s name has been mentioned.
The Serie A champions are planning changes at the back, with Udinese defender Oumar Sollet currently considered a stronger priority for them.
Maguire’s history with United has been checkered. He joined from Leicester City in 2019 for £80 million, making him the most expensive defender in the world at the time.
Since then, he has faced harsh criticism from the club’s captain, lost his place, and then struggled to regain a position of importance.
Maguire recently signed a new contract with Man United.
Maguire remains under contract at Man United after signing a new contract in April until 2027 with the option of another year.
United approved the extension following a period of vast improvement under Michael Carrick, with the club praising his leadership and professionalism.
That’s what’s interesting about Interlink. Maguire is neither an out-of-contract player nor a completely unnecessary player.
Indeed, he had a solid season at United, with post-season reviews showing him as one of the most reliable defenders in the campaign, which ended with them qualifying for the Champions League.
Still, soccer moves quickly. United are set to make some changes to their squad this summer, with Maguire currently 33 years old.
He would make sense, at least as a short-term option, if Inter want an experienced centre-back who brings leadership, aerial strength and Premier League experience.
Could a move to Inter Milan be a possibility for the United defender?
A move to Inter is attractive, but it is unlikely to be an easy one.
Maguire has rebuilt a lot of respect at United and leaving now would be a big decision after recently extending his contract.
Having said that, Serie A might suit him. The pace is different than in the Premier League and his strengths such as positioning, heading, organization and defending inside the box may be even more noticeable in Italy.
For United, the decision will depend on broader planning. If Carrick wants a young, quick defender, letting Maguire go could make sense.
But if they want the experience of a Champions League season, it might be wise to keep him.
