Marcus Ericsson lost his second-place finish in the Indianapolis 500 due to a technology violation, IndyCar announced Monday.

Post-race checks revealed that Ericsson and Kyle Kirkwood’s Andretti’s car used “points that cover and cover points where the revised Energy Management System (EMS) is not approved.”

This violated three different regulations, including Rule 14.3.1, which was obligated to “all parts provided by approved suppliers must be provided without modification unless specifically approved by INDYCAR and stated in these rules or bulletin updates.”

As a result, Ericsson and Kirkwood were relegated to 31st and 32nd in the final classification of the race, respectively, while IndyCar was fined $100,000 for each entry.

Erickson had finished as a close runner-up for Chip Ganassi race winner Alex Pallow, but Kirkwood was originally classified as sixth place.

The third car that failed technical checks was the car of Prema driver Callum Ilott, who was demoted to the 33rd and demoted in the updated order. He tentatively finished the race in 12th place.

In the case of Ilott, the car did not meet the minimum end plate height and position specifications and violated the rules 14.7.6.8 and 14.7.6.4 of the technical regulations of the series.

As in Andretti’s case, Prema was fined $100,000.

Additionally, team managers for all three entries were suspended in one race.
