  • Should Liverpool consider selling Gakpo?

Codi Gakpo’s future at Liverpool has been a hot topic of conversation after reports in the Netherlands that he wants to leave Anfield this summer.

According to SoccerNews.nl, the Dutch winger submitted the transfer request because he is unsure of his role following the sacking of Arne Slott and the expected arrival of Andoni Iraola.

From Gakpo’s perspective, such concerns are natural.

Slott trusted him deeply last season and that relationship clearly helped him feel important at Liverpool.

Gakpo started 32 Premier League games under Slott, scoring seven league goals, but the question now is whether he can enjoy the same confidence under his new manager.

With Liverpool’s change of manager, everything became uncertain.

Despite winning the Premier League in his first year in charge, Slott was sacked after two difficult seasons and Liverpool’s season ended in disappointment and uncertainty.

Iraola is currently expected to take over after reaching a verbal agreement with the club, and his arrival could mean a major tactical reset at Anfield.

That’s what makes Gakpo’s situation interesting. He’s not a bad player by any means. He is intelligent, versatile, technically well-equipped and capable of playing across the front line.

Should Liverpool consider selling Gakpo?

But Liverpool’s left wing position is becoming increasingly competitive, particularly with supporters keen to see more of Rio Ngmoha, one of the club’s most exciting young attackers.

Financial aspects are also important. Gakpo signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool in August 2025, committing his future to the club.

Capologie estimates his current salary at around £250,000-a-week and his contract runs until 2030, so this won’t be an easy sale unless Liverpool receive a serious offer.

Liverpool shouldn’t rush to get rid of Gakpo, but they also can’t ignore the red flags.

If a player feels their career has changed following the departure of a manager, clubs must respond quickly and honestly.

Gakpo is useful, but not untouchable. If Iraola sees him as part of his plans, Liverpool should reassure him and give him clarity.

However, if the new manager wants a faster, more explosive left winger, selling Gakpo while his value is high may be a wise move.
