On Sunday, second-seeded Alexander Zverev defeated the challenge of No. 10 Flavio Coboli to win his first Grand Slam title at the 2026 French Open. Zverev faced Philippe Chatrier at Roland Garros on Sunday, winning in five sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1) over the rising Italian contender.

He is the first German to win a Grand Slam title since Boris Becker won the Australian Open in 1996.

Zverev fought back from two service breaks in the fourth set and defeated Koboli in the tiebreak thanks to an incredibly timely serve.

Zverev has reached three Grand Slam finals, but has fallen short in each of them, losing in five sets to Carlos Alcaraz in 2024. For a long time, Zverev was considered the best player to never win a Grand Slam title on tour.

Sunday, his serve stayed on target despite some hiccups along the way, erasing any remaining doubts. In the fourth set, he broke Koboli at 4-5, leading to a decisive tie-break. Zverev took an early lead in the breaker, but Koboli quickly came back to take the fifth set.

Zverev then secured two breaks from Koboli’s serve, securing both and quickly taking a 4-0 lead in the final set. He finally broke Kobolli with a deft return from Kobolli’s drop shot, which he managed to do before Kobolli came back from play, sealing the match in style with a 6-1 set win.
