The have struggled recently, winning only three out of their last nine games before Monday. After losing a potential save in the ninth inning and needing extra innings following a late go-ahead home run from Tescar Hernandez, the team’s challenges became clear. Manager Dave Roberts expressed frustration with the team’s poor fundamentals, ongoing injuries, and a lineup that seems out of sync.

On Monday, the finally broke their slump by defeating the Cleveland Guardians 7-2 on Memorial Day. Despite Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s strong start, scoring 6-2 runs early, the ‘ offense had been lackluster in previous games, failing to score more than five runs in each of the last seven outings until Monday’s breakthrough.

Shohei Ohtani sparked the offense with a leadoff home run in a second consecutive game, bringing his MLB-leading total to 19 home runs. Andy Pages contributed RBIs with singles in two innings, and the rallied twice in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring two runs each time. Although the bullpen showed signs of weakness and Alex Vesia had to navigate around runners after two blown saves in recent games, the team held strong. In the ninth inning, Will Smith sealed the victory with a home run down the left-field wall at Progressive Field, marking the ‘ return to winning form with a 33-21 record.
