  • Mikel Arteta’s new contract is a big boost for Arsenal
  • Arsenal and Arteta could have the upper hand

Arsenal have reportedly made significant progress in negotiations and are close to signing a new contract with manager Mikel Arteta.

That’s according to the latest from TEAMtalk’s Graham Bailey, who says the Spanish tactician is close to signing a new deal that will make him the highest-paid manager in the Premier League.

Arteta is in new territory as Arsenal manager. When he first took over as manager in 2019, he had never been a manager before, and the north London club were languishing in the middle of the table.

However, they have made steady progress since then and Arsenal have become serious title contenders in recent years, finishing second in three consecutive years and eventually winning the title in 2025/26.

Mikel Arteta’s new contract is a big boost for Arsenal

Arsenal fans will be relieved to hear that Arteta is close to committing to his future, as the 44-year-old only had one year left on his latest contract.

Gunners supporters can expect an official update on the matter soon after negotiations make good progress, which could almost double Arteta’s annual salary.

TEAMtalk claim that Arteta’s current salary of £10m a year will bring him closer to the £20m a year that Pep Guardiola earned at Manchester City under the new terms.

There is no doubt that Arteta is worth every penny, as the former Arsenal and Everton midfielder has become a truly world-class coach and is certainly just getting started.

Arsenal and Arteta could have the upper hand

It is also important that the AFC make this deal now, following news of Guardiola’s departure from Man City, with all other Big Six clubs also making managerial changes recently.

If Arteta stays, Arsenal will have the stability to build on their previous success, but City will certainly struggle to replace a legend like Guardiola.

This could put them into a period of transition, similar to Liverpool and Chelsea, who have also just appointed new managers, with Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi also fresh from jobs at Manchester United and Tottenham respectively.
