Arsenal and Man City face £100m battle over player on Man United’s radar

  • Why Arsenal and City are tempted
  • Newcastle United have a big decision to make

Arsenal and Manchester City are interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer, with the Magpies reportedly seeking around £100m before considering a sale.

According to journalist Nicolò Silla, both clubs are keeping a close eye on the Italian international.

However, Newcastle’s stance is resolute. They don’t want to lose one of their most important midfielders unless a huge offer arrives.

That position is easy to understand. Tonali will join Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023.

Since then he has become a key part of Newcastle’s midfield, bringing control, energy and big game experience.

Why Arsenal and City are tempted

Tonali would be a significant signing for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta already has a strong midfield, but the Italian will add another level of poise, aggression and European pedigree.

He can set the tempo, regain possession and move the ball forward, making him a natural fit for a team looking to compete on all fronts.

Manchester City’s interest is understandable. Tonali has the style and intelligence to integrate into a possession-oriented system, with Josep Guardiola’s side always looking for technical stability in midfield.

His ability to play both as a deep controller and as a more advanced midfielder will give City valuable flexibility.

Newcastle United have a big decision to make

The biggest issue for both clubs is Newcastle’s negotiating position.

Sky Sports reported earlier this year that Tonali’s contract has been extended until 2029 with an option for a further year. That means there is no pressure on Newcastle to sell cheap.

Newcastle remain in a strong position against the possibility of him leaving.

For Arsenal and City, the interest is understandable. However, unless either club is prepared to approach Newcastle’s £100m asking price, this move could be very difficult to materialize.
