Tottenham Hotspur are making good progress in the transfer market. Although it has only been open for a day, it is gradually starting to make its presence felt.
Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi arrived on free transfers, while Spurs are now looking to spend big to ensure they never drop below 17th in the Premier League table again.
There are plans to sign Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke and Manchester City’s Savinho, but that is not the start. Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali could head to north London, but he may not go to Arsenal as widely reported in the build-up to the summer window.
In fact, it looks like Spurs are in the lead right now. They became shocking candidates to sign the Italian player. He and Roberto De Zerbi are from the same region of Italy and are said to be close. This is going to be a little special.
However, he is not the only player with links to Italy who could head to Tottenham.
Elite striker could join Tonali at Spurs
It wasn’t that long ago that Ange Postecoglou criticized Spurs’ ambition and lack of funds. “We were considering Pedro Neto, (Brian) Mbeumo and (Antoine) Semenho,” the Australian said on the overlap, but it ended up being Dominic Solanke and the three teenagers.
The three young men were Archie Gray, Lukas Bergvall and Wilson Odbert.
Now, how do times change? Now it looks as if they heard Ange’s message. Players with a proven track record in the Premier League come to Spurs, but they’re not just proven, they’re real stars. Van Hecke, like Senesi, has been one of the best defenders in the division in recent years.
But Tonali would be the icing on the cake. He is a player Manchester City are eyeing as a replacement for Elliott Anderson. If they cross the line and reach an agreement, it will be a seismic event.
The same could be said for signing Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic. The Serbian player is set to leave Turin on a free transfer this summer after failing to agree terms on a new contract.
This opens the door for some of Europe’s elite clubs to swoop in, and TEAMtalk says Spurs are at the table.
Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle have reportedly held talks with the player’s camp about a possible transfer. Although a deal could be completed without a transfer fee, Blachowicz’s wage demands are understood to be significantly higher.
In fact, he is asking for around £8 million a year to join, which equates to a weekly wage of £150,000.
Comparison of Vlahovic and Dominic Solanke
Almost every area of the pitch was a concern for Spurs last season, but it’s clear they need to sign an upgrade to their central striker berth.
Harry Kane left in the summer of 2023 and it has been a devastating tragedy for the Lilywhite family ever since. While Kane is like this, of Tottenham, who has the best striker in world football and won two Bundesliga trophies with Bayern Munich, have been on the brink of relegation in successive seasons.
Spurs tried to replace Kane with Solanke, but no striker can replicate the England captain, but the former Bournemouth man has really struggled following his £65m move.
The fact that they paid the price looks worse and worse as the months go by. The centre-forward scored 16 goals during his debut campaign in north London, but only nine of those came in league matches.
The 2025/26 season was particularly disappointing for Solanke, as he only appeared in 15 league games, 11 of which were starts. In the process, the 28-year-old only managed to score three goals in league matches.
There’s a lot to admire about the Chelsea youth product, particularly his involvement in the build-up, but the truth is he hasn’t performed well for the money spent.
As a result, Vlahovic will be a huge upgrade after enduring his own struggles in Italy. Just a few years ago, the player was described by Serbian FA president Nenad Bjekovic as “a more complete striker than Erling Haaland” and by Italian legend Luca Toni as “one of the best strikers in the world”.
Vlahovic vs Solanke career | ||
|---|---|---|
season | Vlahovic’s goal | Solanke’s goal |
2020/21 | twenty one | 15 |
2021/22 | 29 | 30 |
2022/23 | 14 | 7 |
2023/24 | 18 | twenty one |
2024/25 | 15 | 16 |
2025/26 | 10 | 6 |
That last statement citing his qualifications as one of the best still rings very true. Like Solanke, the Serbian endured an injury-plagued season, making just 11 starts in Italy’s top flight. However, the 26-year-old remained in good form, scoring seven goals in 19 league games and 10 in 23 games overall.
In fact, Vlahovic was always ruthless in front of goal. The statistics back it up. He has a better track record than Solanke, has done it at a higher level and for a longer period of time, and has actually surpassed the Spurs striker’s best record in the Championship.
Vlahovic’s set of attributes would also make him very suitable for the Premier League. He is fast and powerful and can intimidate defenses around the world. He has more presence than Solanke and, importantly, he is a better goalscorer.
