Report: Chelsea ask questions about 5 players from Xabi Alonso’s former club

Chelsea are reportedly considering a major move to Xabi Alonso’s former club Real Madrid this summer.

According to Simon Phillips, the Blues have also used recent negotiations with Real Madrid over the sale of Marc Cucurella to approach five of their own players.

Chelsea are said to be interested in Alvaro Carreras, Arda Güler, Aurelian Choameni, Victor Valdepenas and Dean Huyssen.

Huysen was a particular target for Chelsea during his time at Bournemouth, but Carreras could be a player to keep an eye on as he will be directly affected by the addition of another left-back in Cucurella.

What is Chelsea’s transfer strategy?

It’s still early in the transfer window for Chelsea, but selling Cucurella is unlikely to inspire much confidence.

He’s an experienced and consistent performer on a team that is struggling overall, and the speed with which the deal was made probably indicates that CFC didn’t hold out too much to convince him to stay, or at least get a bigger payday on his sale.

According to BBC Sport, Chelsea have signed Cucurella for 2022 in a package worth £60m, with Spain international Cucurella’s transfer fee to the Bernabeu reportedly slightly lower at £51.8m.

Even if Chelsea were to replace Cucurella with Carreras, it’s a bit of a risk for a player who could likely look more like a downgrade than an upgrade.

Other Madrid players, particularly Choameni and Guler, could be exciting additions, but it remains to be seen how likely such talented players will be to move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League, will not be playing European football next season, and their current project does not seem to be heading in the right direction at all.

Perhaps Alonso’s presence could persuade some players to join, especially those who have already worked under him and know how successful he will be as a coach.
