Manchester United may have identified Matheus Fernandes as one of their main targets in midfield, but the club are not pinning all their hopes on one deal.
Ben Jacobs says United have other options in mind if they fail to sign the West Ham United midfielder this summer.
Jacobs said of the situation:
“Even if they don’t get him, I still think there’s potential in the Carlos Baleva situation and I’ll keep an eye on Sander Berge, another player Manchester United have been discussing in recent weeks.”
It clearly shows United’s mindset. Fernandes remains a priority, but Old Trafford officials are aware that West Ham’s asking price will not make a deal easy.
The Guardian reports that West Ham value him at around £80 million, despite the club’s relegation and financial pressures.
Why Brighton’s option remains attractive for Man United
Baleva will be a completely different kind of target. Brighton’s midfielders are powerful, aggressive and excellent at getting through pressure and passing the ball.
United have praised him in the past and his profile is a perfect fit for the athletic midfield rebuild the club were looking to complete.
The problem is Brighton. Young players rarely sell cheap, especially if they have Premier League experience and long-term upside potential.
So unless Brighton soften their stance, Baleva could be just as difficult as Fernandes.
Sander Berge offers a safer route
Berge is a more experienced and probably more affordable option.
The Fulham midfielder may not bring the same excitement as Fernandes or Baleva, but he brings size, composure and Premier League know-how.
That could become attractive if United decide they need a reliable midfield option rather than another big bet.
Sky Sports previously reported that United had their eye on Berge prior to his move to Fulham, so that interest is not new.
Manchester United’s midfield plans look flexible. Fernandes is the biggest target, but Baleva and Berge could soon become serious options in Plan B if West Ham refuse to drop the price.
