Liverpool and Manchester United could be looking to take their rivalry into the transfer market to sign an attacking star who would instantly break Premier League records.

Liverpool are chasing more wingers after Munoz

The Reds are a club to keep an eye on in the current transfer window, having just hijacked Newcastle United’s deal to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna.

Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are willing to back Andoni Iraola after spending big last summer and it’s no secret that they are targeting the speedy winger.

Confirming the news of Muñoz’s arrival, Liverpool issued a statement saying: “Liverpool FC has agreed to sign Victor Muñoz from Osasuna, subject to a work permit application and international clearance.

“The forward, who is currently on World Cup duty with the Spanish national team, has completed a medical check at his country’s home base in Tennessee, USA and has signed a long-term contract.

“Muñoz is the first new player since the appointment of coach Andoni Iraola and will join up with his new teammates later this summer after completing his participation in tournaments with the national team.”

And manager Fabrizio Romano confirmed the Reds plan to sign another winger and midfielder following the Spaniard’s arrival.

Yann Diomand is the most prominent figure in that regard. The RB Leipzig star is expected to command a transfer fee of more than £100m this summer, with interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool.

Liverpool’s initial bid of around £87m was rejected by Leipzig, who are demanding closer to £104m, but the Anfield side are prepared to focus on alternative targets should they miss out on Diomande.

Whoever arrives, a key criterion will be blistering pace, with Liverpool potentially looking to overtake Man United in the race to land the Ligue 1 sensation.

If it’s not Diomand, it might be someone faster.

Ben Jacobs says Liverpool are currently looking to sign Matias Fernandes-Pardo, who Man United have been “working on” to sign in recent weeks.

This could reinvigorate the Premier League’s biggest rivalry in the transfer market for a player who will instantly become the fastest man in English top flight history.

It’s not just the Premier League that Fernandes-Pardo is running away from. At 38.5km/h, the versatile forward would have become the fastest player in last season’s Champions League, beating Manchester City’s Abdukkodir Kusanov.

The 21-year-old has more than just pace. He also has an eye for goal, scoring eight goals in all competitions last season and a further seven.

If Diomande opts for PSG, Liverpool should turn their full attention to the LOSC Lille star and score one point ahead of Man United in the process.
