Harry Kane scored twice against Croatia, making him equal with Gary Lineker as England’s all-time World Cup goalscorer.
Thomas Tuchel’s side finally gained the upper hand against a tough Croatian side who pressed high and were certainly full of purpose in the first half.
player | england cap | england goal | world cup goals |
Gary Lineker | 80 | 48 | 10 |
|---|---|---|---|
harry kane | 115 | 81 | 10 |
sir jeff Hurst | 49 | twenty four | 5 |
michael owen | 89 | 40 | 4 |
sir bobby charlton | 106 | 49 | 4 |
At one stage it even looked like they were destined to take the points after an entertaining first period, but Jude Bellingham put a stop to it before some fans could return to their seats to start the second half.
If anyone had any doubts about the standards Tuchel and his staff are holding the current England squad to, then assistant manager Anthony Barry’s scathing words during the break should have provided a resounding answer.
He gave a brutal assessment while the cameras were rolling, but everything said in the dressing room clearly worked wonders.
However, despite perhaps the most convincing attacking performance of the tournament so far, it still wasn’t enough to convince Danny Mills that Kane was good enough to give the England legend another go.

Mills backs Rooney to replace Kane in current England team
talk to soccer fancastIn connection with betTOM, Mills claimed that Wayne Rooney is better than Kane in the current England team.
Asked which ‘golden generation’ players will join the current squad, the former Leeds and England international believes the Manchester United legend will be ‘scoring hat-tricks for fun’ in Tuchel’s side.
“Wayne Rooney came into this team for me before Harry Kane. Wayne really had it all in his prime. It’s scary to think how many goals Wayne would have scored in this generation when no one could touch him. He could have scored a hat-trick for fun.”
It will definitely be a memorable battle between Kane and Rooney. The former has already overtaken the Man United legend as England’s top scorer, and could aim even higher if he becomes England’s World Cup-winning captain this summer.
But there’s no denying that Tuchel’s team could have the most complete attack of the tournament if they had Rooney at his peak.
