Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United and are also keeping an eye on Matheus Fernandes.

Manager Fabrizio Romano admitted Tottenham are “very focused” on signing the Italy international but are preparing for contingencies. They also had “direct contact” with the Portuguese midfielder’s agent.

Tottenham need Sandro Tonali

Tottenham need more control and composure in midfield, so it’s no wonder they’re eyeing Tonali and Fernandes. Both players showed their good spirit in Premier League games against Newcastle and West Ham respectively. They have the quality to play for a bigger club and a move to the north London club could be exciting.

However, Manchester United and Arsenal are also interested in both players. They will be able to provide Champions League football and a platform to fight for the trophy.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will be able to convince top players to join the club without European football. They finished 17th in the league table last season and convincing elite players to join may be difficult.

Could Tottenham sign Tonali or Fernandes?

Tottenham are looking to significantly strengthen their squad this summer and are already quite active on the market. However, improving their attacking unit and midfield should be a priority for them before the window closes. They need a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, a striker and another quality winger.

Roberto De Zerbi is expected to turn things around at the London club but will need support in the transfer market. Club leaders should do everything in their power to sign either Tonali or Fernandes this summer.
