  • Leeds make an offer for Shay Charles but it falls short of Saints’ valuation
  • Manchester United also have strong links with Shay Charles

According to Sky Sports, Leeds United have made a surprise offer for Southampton midfielder Shay Charles.

The West Yorkshire club aim to establish a secure foothold in the top flight following last season’s 14th place in the Premier League, with manager Daniel Farke looking to strengthen his options in the middle of the park and have formally expressed interest in the highly-rated Northern Ireland international.

Leeds make an offer for Shay Charles but it falls short of Saints’ valuation

According to Sky Sports, Leeds have made a formal bid of £20m for the 22-year-old midfielder.

However, this opening proposal does not meet Southampton’s current assessment of the player.

Despite the immediate knockback, the situation is said to be ongoing, with active negotiations continuing in an attempt to find a common ground between the two clubs.

Southampton originally signed the former Manchester City academy candidate for a starting salary of £10.5m in 2023, which could rise to £15m with add-ons.

The south coast club feel Charles is worth a higher premium after making 76 appearances for the Saints and showing impressive improvement.

However, Southampton’s negotiating position is a bit more complicated. Retaining top-class talent for the 2026/27 season is becoming increasingly difficult after failing to return to the Premier League after a controversial Championship campaign.

Manchester United also have strong links with Shay Charles

Leeds are not the only high-profile club tracking the versatile defensive midfielder.

Manchester United have also been strongly linked with Shay Charles, with reports suggesting the Red Devils are actively scouting him as a replacement for Casemiro.

Old Trafford decision-makers are rumored to view Charles as a highly cost-effective emergency option to rebuild their midfield in the summer, especially with other Premier League targets expected to cost astronomical sums.

A product of Manchester City’s academy system, Charles also boasts experience in elite environments, despite limited first-team minutes at the Etihad.

During his time at the club, he was part of the team that won both the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League.
