Marketa Vondrousova surprised the tennis world in 2023 by becoming the first unseeded female player to win Wimbledon. However, the former Wimbledon champion refused a drug test and will be unable to compete for the next four years.

Vondrousova was suspended for four years by the International Tennis Integrity Authority (ITIA) on Monday for refusing to submit to a drug test, the agency announced.

The incident occurred in December when inspectors visited Vondrousova’s home. Vondrousova said the random visit triggered an “acute stress reaction.” She claimed in a statement in April that Ms. Fondrousova was under intense stress, which, combined with her fear for her safety, impaired her judgment and refused the test.

Vondrousova claimed that the tester arrived outside the specific time period given to Vondrousova and said the tester did not properly identify himself.

The ITIA held a hearing in April and asked an independent tribunal to decide on Vondrousova’s punishment. The court sentenced Fondrousova to a four-year suspension.

In a statement on Monday, the ITIA said it understands that testing can be stressful, but it is necessary to ensure competition can take place “without incident.”

“While we understand that the testing process can be unpleasant and an added burden on athletes whose jobs already involve high levels of pressure and scrutiny, the testing process is essential to ensure fair competition.”

Additionally, ITIA said unscheduled testing is an “essential tool.”

“Unpredictable testing is an essential tool to protect clean sport.

“An independent tribunal has ultimately upheld that principle. This case is an important reminder that athletes can be tested anytime, anywhere, and refusal carries significant risks.”

Under ITIA regulations, refusing a test is treated as a positive test, so Fondrousova was suspended.

According to the ITIA, while suspended, he is not allowed to participate in, coach in, or attend “any event sponsored or sanctioned by the ITF, WTA, ATP, Grand Slam, or any national association.”

Vondrousova’s 2023 Wimbledon victory marked the first and only Grand Slam victory of her career. Since then, she has reached the quarterfinals of three Grand Slam tournaments, but has never advanced beyond that round.
