Atlético Madrid have officially announced that they plan to lodge a complaint with FIFA regarding Barcelona’s approach to transferring Julián Álvarez.

Barça are accused of negotiating with Alvarez during his contract with Atlético, which the Spanish giants have called a “protection period”.

The Argentina international is in high demand after his impressive time in La Liga, so it’s perhaps no surprise that Barcelona are keen on him.

Nevertheless, see below, journalist Fabrizio Romano quotes Atlético CEO Gilles Marin. “Our responsibility is to protect Atlético’s interests and that is why we will file a complaint with FIFA against Barcelona for negotiating with the player under a valid contract during his protection period.”

What does this mean for Julian Alvarez’s move to Arsenal?

What this means for Alvarez’s future is not yet clear, but today journalist Ihsan Khan also posted about Arsenal’s interest in the former Manchester City forward.

See Khan’s post on X below about how Arsenal have taken a close look at Alvarez and strongly believe he is ideal for Mikel Arteta’s side…

Still, Atlético don’t seem keen on selling their star player, especially to Barcelona.

We’ll have to wait and see what this means for Arsenal, with Alvarez himself apparently keen on a move to Camp Nou if possible.

However, given the fractious relationship between Atlético and Barça, it may be unlikely that an agreement can be reached that would allow Arsenal to return to the race.

The Gunners could have such a world-class striker in their squad, but given that he has not made the team a personal priority, it may be worth considering whether he is the best option.

It’s worth noting that Arsenal signed Victor Gokeres as a major addition last summer, but the jury is still out on the Sweden international and Alvarez feels like an all-rounder who could be the perfect upgrade to take this team closer to Champions League glory.
