Chelsea are currently not planning a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lukas Bergvall, despite previously being linked with the young Swedish talent.
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea had explored the possibility of signing Bergvall in January, but Spurs blocked any potential deal at the time.
The player’s future at Tottenham currently looks uncertain, but the Blues are not expected to take a new approach.
This is an interesting decision as Bergvall clearly fits the type of profile that Chelsea prefer.
He is young, technically gifted and versatile and can play in a variety of midfield roles. However, Chelsea’s reinforcement plans appear to be focused elsewhere.
Tottenham’s situation remains uncertain
Bergvall’s future has been a hot topic following reports that he wants to leave Tottenham this summer.
The Evening Standard reported that Spurs would ask around £45m if they decide to sell him.
That’s a hefty fee for a 20-year-old midfielder who still needs to develop his regular football. For the Blues, that may be one reason why a move is not currently on the table.
The club already has a number of young midfielders, but they must be careful not to give the squad too many similar profiles.
Chelsea looks to other areas
Under manager Xabi Alonso, Chelsea are expected to strengthen their positions even more urgently.
Defensive reinforcements and a wide range of options appear to be high on the list, but any movement in midfield could be affected by the sending off.
It makes sense for Chelsea to leave. Bergvall is talented, but Spurs won’t make this deal easy and Chelsea already have young players who need plenty of playing time.
There is no active move for the Spurs midfielder from Chelsea. Things could change in the future, but for now this looks more like a monitored opportunity than a full-fledged transfer pursuit.
