Tottenham could be backed in their pursuit of a move for Matheus Fernandes, it has been reported, as Manchester United appear prepared to break his contract.

According to iNews, West Ham United are said to be asking for £80 million for Fernandes, but Man United believe that is too high and could instead consider Alex Scott as a replacement.

Fernandes is an obvious candidate for sale this summer, as he has been brilliant for West Ham and is thought not to want to remain with the Hammers, who play in the Championship.

The talented young Portuguese international could work for a number of big clubs and could certainly help United as a replacement for the departing Casemiro.

However, he appears ready to consider alternatives, which could be good news for Tottenham.

Matheus Fernandes seems to prefer Manchester United

However, this is not great news for Fernandes himself, with previous reports suggesting the 21-year-old would like to move to Old Trafford if possible.

This was claimed by Andy Mitten on YouTube’s Talk of the Devils podcast, despite admitting that Fernandes could be open to a move to Spurs if a move to United doesn’t work out.

MUFC should do everything in their power to bring in this top talent who wants to play for them, but sometimes it’s not that simple and they also need to be careful about overspending.

This has been a perennial problem for the Red Devils in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, with many of their most expensive signings proving to be huge failures, including Angel Di Maria, Paul Pogba, Anthony and Jadon Sancho.

Fernandes may not look like an £80m player just yet, but Nottingham Forest made a whopping £116m from the sale of Elliott Anderson to Manchester City, according to BBC Sport and others, so it’s a market that looks like the midfielder will be looking for a big transfer.
