Spurs in talks with Newcastle over signing Sandro Tonali
According to famous YouTube transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham signed Fernandes for a club-record fixed fee of £85 million guaranteed, with no additional fees or future sale clauses.
The structural clarity of the deal was exactly what West Ham needed to get the deal over the line.
Fernandes represents a major coup for manager Roberto De Zerbi, but Romano revealed Tottenham are far from satisfied.
The club are actively negotiating with Newcastle United to sign Italian international Sandro Tonali as they actively rebuild their engine room.
“Tottenham came in with a guaranteed fixed fee of £85m, no extra fees or a future sale clause. West Ham got the guarantee they wanted. I told them the amount three or four weeks ago: £85m to sign Matheus Fernandes.”
“And now this player has signed for £85m. We said in the video two days ago that payment terms were going to be important. They didn’t want a structure with too many add-ons or complicated routes to price. Now the price has been reached. We’ve reached £85m for a player that Roberto De Zerbi really wanted.”
“We’ll keep an eye on the next move because Tottenham are still in talks with Newcastle over Sandro Tonali and we’ll have to see how that develops too. But there’s no doubt they’re working hard to rebuild their midfield.”
Journalist Ben Jacobs further confirmed the club’s bold summer plans for X, revealing that Spurs see Tonali as a completely separate pursuit from Fernandes.
Rather than choosing between two elite operators, the North London organization aims to complete transactions for both at the same time.
However, signing Tonali may not be so easy as Manchester City are also targeting the Newcastle star.
The Premier League giants are keen to strengthen their depth with a second midfielder following record signing Elliott Anderson.
Spurs are building a super team under De Zerbi
Tottenham, who barely survived a tumultuous domestic campaign last season, are backing De Zerbi heavily with significant financial backing as he looks to put his trademark style into practice.
They have already signed Premier League veterans such as Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka on free transfers.

Spurs also acquired two centre-backs, Marcos Senesi, on a free transfer and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m.
The arrival of Fernandes, complemented by the possibility of a surprise attack by Tonali, is a huge statement of intent.
There is no doubt that the Spurs will be a team to watch next season as well.
