The last American remaining at Wimbledon is sixth-seeded Taylor Fritz, who has dropped just one set in her previous four matches and is looking for her first Grand Slam title. Not only has Fritz never won a major tournament, his only other final was at the 2024 US Open against current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, which the Italian won in straight sets. The 28-year-old Fritz, who has yet to win a singles title in 2026, advanced to this point with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-4 victory over No. 10 seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in the fourth round on Monday.
The big hitter hit 23 aces and won 90% of his first serve points, winning in just 1 hour and 41 minutes. Spending that little bit of time on the court will only help Fritz on Wednesday. Bublik, who fought a four-hour marathon against Francis Tiafoe in the previous round, looked pretty exhausted as Monday’s match progressed.
“When he got a chance to break, he grabbed it, and when he went into some service games, he showed some expressions in some scary moments,” Fritz said. “I played really well to get out of that situation. Getting through the match without losing your life on the court is important in a Grand Slam. I had a tough match in the final round, but I felt good that I was able to play smoothly.”

It’s the fourth time in the past five years that Fritz has reached the last eight at Wimbledon and the third time in three years, joining Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick as the only American men to play three consecutive quarters at the London Games, and his only further advance came in the 2025 semifinals when he lost in four sets to second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz.
Fritz won 11 of his 13 matches on grass this year, reaching the finals in Halle and Stuttgart. His 47 wins in grass court matches over the past 10 years are the most on the ATP Tour. Grass is clearly his ideal surface, boasting a career-best winning percentage of .663 and winning half of his 10 career singles titles.
It’s been 26 years since an American won a singles title at Wimbledon, and Fritz is at +900 as of this article. Since 2001, Roddick is the only player to reach the final at the All England Club, losing all three matches to Roger Federer.

Fritz will next face current French Open champion Zverev, who is at a rest disadvantage. That’s because he was unable to finish his fourth-round match against world No. 13 Jiri Rehekka on Monday night before the local curfew of 11 p.m. The match was stopped with Zverev in control at 6-4, 7-5, 3-3. Rehechka won that third set 6-3 on Tuesday, with Zverev ending in a fourth-set tiebreak.
In that fourth set, the 29-year-old won 87% of his points (27 of 31) from his first serve. There will be a lot of aces in this set, but there will also be some double faults on both sides. Zverev became the first German player since Boris Becker in 1991 to reach at least the quarter-finals of each of the first three Grand Slam tournaments of the season.
Playing just over an hour on Tuesday certainly wasn’t ideal for Zverev, who is +850 away from winning his first Wimbledon and has never been to the quarterfinals before, but at least he didn’t have to go to the fifth set. There is no doubt that Zverev has had a longer career than Fritz, but with a series record of 5 wins and 10 losses and losing his last seven games, it seems like a bad fit for German.

Their only match this year was a grass-court preliminary match in Halle, which Fritz won in three sets in the semifinals. His winning streak against Zverev began in his last match at Wimbledon, a five-set victory for the American in the fourth round. Zverev won his remaining two matches at the All England Club in 2018 and 2021.
The winner will face world No. 9 Flavio Cobolli of Italy or wildcard Arthur Ferry of Great Britain in the semi-finals. I predict it will be Kobolli, the -285 favorite. But a win on Wednesday would avoid Sinner, who is a -250 favorite to win the tournament, at least until Sunday’s final game could be played.
