Lefty Génesis Cabrera Embraces Free Agency, Opts to Sign with Cubs Following Mets DFA

The Mets have officially lost one of their left-handed relief pitchers. Genesis Cabrera is widely reported to have signed with the Chicago Cubs. Cabrera was designated for assignment this weekend to make roster space for a fresh arm from Triple-A. After clearing waivers and being sent back to the minors, the southpaw opted to enter free agency once again.

Cabrera initially signed a minor league contract with the Mets during the offseason and showed promise in spring training but did not secure a spot on the major league roster out of camp. However, due to injuries on the major league team, he was called upon to contribute in the bullpen and performed reasonably well, posting a 3.52 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over seven appearances.

Currently, the Mets have only Jose Castillo and Brandon Waddell as left-handed pitchers in their bullpen. The minor league prospect Brooks Lauries, who is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, is another southpaw to keep an eye on for the remainder of the season.

Fan Take: Losing Cabrera is a significant shift for the Mets’ bullpen depth, underscoring the challenges teams face managing roster spots amid injuries. This move highlights the constant shuffle in baseball that can impact team dynamics and introduces intriguing questions about how the Cubs might capitalize on their new addition.
