SNL standout Marcello Hernandez was assigned to host the ESPYs, and his opening monologue set the tone, criticizing several stars including Tiger Woods.
Hernandez has been one of SNL’s brightest young stars in recent years and is also a huge sports fan. Therefore, it is no surprise that he was asked to host the ESPYs.
But in a surprising twist, he made a joke about Tiger Woods while praising young Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.

Marcello Hernandez jokes that Tiger Woods will be on the cover of ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’
During his opening monologue at the 2026 ESPY Awards, Marcello Hernandez took the time to joke with several athletes.
What initially appeared to be a heartfelt compliment for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, Hernandez turned it into a brutal attack on Tiger Woods.
“Congratulations to Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams on the cover of the new Madden video game…
“And Tiger Woods is going to be on the cover of Grand Theft Auto. I love you, Tiger. I’m a huge fan. It’s just so well written.”
Hernandez appeared to apologize for the comment, but said the joke was so well written that he felt it had to be told.
Tiger Woods focused on physical and mental recovery
The comment seemed to refer to Woods’ recent troubles off the golf course. But Woods has largely focused on his recovery over the last year.
It was announced that Woods will be taking a break from professional golf for a while to prioritize his mental and physical health.
He may be one of the biggest stars in golf today, but this legendary figure has had some personal struggles that he has now decided to resolve as a priority.
Hernandez’s comments may not seem like a big deal given the serious nature of Woods’ struggles, but Tiger’s priority is to get better.
