Liverpool have reportedly made Adam Wharton their top target for a midfield transfer this summer, perhaps taking a lesson from England’s World Cup failure.

Wharton has shone for Crystal Palace in recent years and is more like an intelligent midfielder on the ball who can dictate the tempo of games and bring a little more composure and control from the center of the park.

In short, as Argentina revealed in Wednesday’s semi-final, they have everything England were missing at this summer’s World Cup.

Adam Wharton moved to Liverpool because England team disliked him?

According to Football Transfers, Liverpool have now turned down Wolves’ option to sign Joao Gomez and are focusing on Wharton as a priority to give something different to their midfield.

Some may find it surprising that a top club like LFC would be paying attention to Wharton, who was not even selected for England’s World Cup squad, but perhaps, in a strange way, it is important.

England have a history of overlooking players like Wharton. Wharton’s profile is perhaps most similar to Michael Carrick. Although he was not flashy in appearance, he was a man who contributed to the success of his club team, although he never really cemented his place in the national team.

Liverpool have played with the likes of Xabi Alonso and Fabinho over the years and will certainly understand the importance of having players like that in their squad, as they also share similar characteristics with players like Thiago Alcantara and Ryan Gravenbirch.

Liverpool move could help Adam Wharton’s chances in England

Perhaps a big move could help Wharton break into the England squad more often in the future.

The 22-year-old has won four caps so far, but many will feel he has already earned the chance to win a few more.

Wharton has been a huge part of Palace’s recent success in the FA Cup and Europa Conference League and could have achieved something for England this summer.

Even though Declan Rice and Elliott Anderson were always likely to be Thomas Tuchel’s starting midfield pairing, having Wharton off the bench could have made a big difference against Argentina, where England completely lost control of the game, failing to connect several passes and only retreating into their own penalty area.
