  • Jamie Donley impresses Roberto de Zerbi in Tottenham training session
        • Tottenham receive offer from Premier League club for ‘outstanding’ forward alongside Bergvall

Jamie Donley has quietly impressed Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi ahead of his first full season.

While much of the attention has been focused on his big-money signing this summer, Donley and other academy stars are also making their case for De Zerbi.

The 21-year-old made his breakthrough at Leyton Orient in 2024/25, scoring eight goals and providing 10 assists in 39 League One appearances as Richie Wellens’ side reached the play-off final.

His performances saw him win both the club’s Supporters’ Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards, underscoring how influential he has been.

That success was by no means sudden.

Donley has been representing Tottenham since the age of eight, helping the club’s under-21 side win two Premier League titles, and made his senior debut away to Man City in December 2023.

He also represented Northern Ireland full-time, making his first-team debut in 2025 and scoring his first international goal later that year.

Donley started his career as a centre-forward, but developed into an attacking midfielder who could play deeper or behind the striker.

That flexibility makes him an attractive option for De Zerbi. De Zerbi’s team is looking for players with intelligent movement, technical quality and who are comfortable in possession of the ball under pressure.

Football Fancast Verdict

reliability

John Wenham is well known among Tottenham supporters through his Lilywhite Rose platform, where he regularly reports on academy players and youth development. Although he is not considered a mainstream transfer journalist, he has built a reputation for providing informed updates on Spurs’ young players and internal academy issues.

finances

Donley is under contract at Tottenham until 2029, so Spurs are under no pressure to sell and it could take a serious offer to change the Lilywhites’ mind.

insight

Born in Northern Ireland and raised in Essex, Donley joined Tottenham at a young age and progressed through all academy age groups. Originally a striker, he evolved into a creative attacking midfielder, gaining senior international recognition for Northern Ireland before his 21st birthday.

impact

If Donley continues to develop, Tottenham could sign a technically gifted, born-and-bred midfielder who can be creative between the lines. His versatility and understanding of the club’s playing philosophy make him an attractive long-term option, but his arrival would also strengthen Spurs’ commitment to promoting academy talent.

Although loan spells at Stoke City and Oxford United were not as memorable as last year, he has already shown he is capable of playing senior football and could well get his chance in the Premier League.

According to academy insider John Wenham, Donley is one of the few Tottenham players to continue training with De Zerbi’s first team rather than returning to the Under-21s after returning from loan.

Wenham also claims that Spurs’ new head coach rates the midfielder highly and the club have no intention of accepting him.

Tottenham have not commented publicly on Donley’s future, but Wenham’s update is in line with the club’s recent treatment of academy graduates.

After recalling him unsuccessfully at Stoke in January, Spurs sent him to Oxford for the second half of last season, ensuring he continued to play regularly in the Championship rather than sitting on the bench.

The loan experience gave him valuable exposure to different environments, which seems to have increased his chances of joining De Zerbi’s plans.

Interest from other clubs would not be surprising given Donley’s reputation, but Tottenham appear determined to keep one of their brightest academy products.

Interestingly, back when De Zerbi was linked with a move to Spurs in 2023, Donley was suggested as a potential asset for the Italian, and that could now become a reality.
