  • Rome negotiations continue as Garnacho makes his wishes clear
  • Chelsea departure could revive Garnacho’s career

Alejandro Garnacho has reportedly set AS Roma as his preferred destination as Chelsea consider a move less than a year after signing the winger from Manchester United.

The Argentina international joined Stamford Bridge for £40m in August 2025 but never really hit the ground running in his first season.

With Chelsea rebuilding their squad under manager Xabi Alonso and Roma seeking speed and directness in attack, a move to Serie A could provide Garnacho with the reset he thinks he needs.

Both clubs still need to find an agreement on the structure and total amount of the transfer, but discussions remain active.

Rome negotiations continue as Garnacho makes his wishes clear

The main update comes from Fabrizio Romano, who reports that Garnacho is prioritizing Roma while negotiations with Chelsea continue.

However, the proposed regime remains a major hurdle. Chelsea want him to leave permanently or with a guarantee, while Roma are offering him a loan with a buyout clause that could become mandatory.

According to GOAL, Roma’s offer includes a rental fee of 5 million euros and a buyout option of 35 million euros.

Manchester United will also receive 10 per cent of any future sales of Garnacho under the terms of the deal that brought him to Chelsea.

Sky Sports reported that Chelsea have made Garnacho available for transfer after he made 43 appearances during a difficult debut season, scoring eight goals and providing four assists.

His contract with Chelsea runs until 2032, meaning there will be little pressure on the London club to accept a discounted offer.

Chelsea departure could revive Garnacho’s career

Roma appear to be a smarter move than other immediate transfers within the Premier League.

Garnacho is only 22 years old, but after scoring just one goal in 24 league appearances last season, he needs regular appearances, confidence and a clearly defined attacking role.

Xabi Alonso has already confirmed interest from other clubs, indicating that his departure would suit all parties.

Garnacho’s speed and willingness to attack defenders could serve him well under manager Gian Piero Gasperini, especially if used as an inside forward alongside an attacking wing-back who provides width.

Serie A may also offer him a less intense environment to improve his movement and decision-making.

Rome’s financial risks remain significant. A potential €40 million commitment is significant for a player coming off a weak season.

However, some performance-related circumstances could make this trade worthwhile. Chelsea will recoup most of their initial investment, Roma will acquire a winger with high development potential, and Garnacho will now get the fresh start he needs in his career.
