Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has entered a new phase, with the club abandoning one of their long-term goals and considering several alternatives before the transfer window closes.
Manager Michael Carrick has already added Youri Tielemans and Andrej Santos, but United are still in need of a third midfielder with defensive ability, athleticism and the ability to get the ball under pressure.
That profile is important because the team already includes players who are used to holding the ball.
The missing piece is someone who can defend the defense, win duels and move the team forward.
United appear determined to assess the market carefully rather than rush into another big-money signing.
Manchester United rules out return to previous goal
Manchester United have no intention of reviving their pursuit of Ederson, but Roma midfielder Manu Kone is one of several players being evaluated, according to Fabrizio Romano on YouTube.
“For Man United, the contract is 100% off and neither Atalanta nor the player will be contacted again under any circumstances. Regarding Manchester United’s midfield, I can confirm that they highly value Manu Kone from Roma, but he is not alone. They have been in contact with their agent, but there has been no bid for Roma and there has been no contact between the clubs yet. Man United are considering their options.”
Romano also explained the type of midfielder United are looking for:
“Now it’s about choosing a third midfielder. Someone who is defensive, physical, who can break through the lines, someone who could be an important player in that sense. Manchester United are exploring the market.”
Red Devils need to invest carefully in the market
This latest information suggests United are more selective than reports of an impending deal suggest.
The Guardian also reported that Carrick has praised Kone, Alex Scott and Eduardo Camavinga, but their asking prices could complicate a move.
Kone seems a logical fit given his power, ball-running and defensive energy, but United should avoid paying a high fee just because Ederson is no longer an option.
Tielemans can control the game, while Santos brings youth and technical quality. Your next addition should complement its strengths rather than duplicating them.
It’s wise to widen your list of candidates. The smartest player won’t necessarily be the most famous, but he will be the midfielder who gives Carrick tactical flexibility and makes it difficult for United to play.
