Newcastle join Coventry in race for Fikayo Tomori, making inevitable outcome clear

It’s been another miserable summer for Newcastle United so far. They missed their top target in attack, Victor Muñoz, and their top target in midfield, Johan Manzambi. Both contracts were hijacked, leaving the Magpies back on Groundhog Day of Rejection.

Still they keep moving. The people at St James’ Park are now focusing on their final line, joining Coventry City in the race to sign AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.

Why could Fikayo Tomori leave AC Milan this summer?

Contract expired

Currently, Tomori has only one year left on his current contract with AC Milan, but there is no prospect of a new contract. Instead, the San Siro side have set their asking price at just €20m (about £17m), meaning Newcastle or Coventry could strike a bargain deal.

AC Milan promotes sale

Looking back on his time in Italy, Tomori will consider it a success. However, he is now an outsider at Milan and it seems inevitable that he will leave. This is a huge boost for stakeholders who have received the green light to act.

Is Tomori still at the top level?

The former Chelsea defender started 31 games in Serie A last season as AC Milan finished the season in a disappointing fifth place. However, at 28 years old, this season is not the beginning of Tomori’s downfall and he still has the quality to play in the Premier League.

Newcastle or Coventry?

The Frank Lampard factor could complicate things for Newcastle, but this is a transfer race they should easily win. The Magpies remain a more attractive option than the newly promoted side.

The ball could be in Tomori’s court if both Newcastle and Coventry are looking for bargains ahead of next season. The last thing the people at St James’ Park want to do is lose out in yet another transfer race.

Newcastle should press ahead with signing Tomori

It’s not every day that a Scudetto-winning defender with Premier League and Champions League experience is available for just €20m (about £17m), which is what makes Tomori a must-buy option.

As reported by Corriere dello Sport and relayed by Sport Witness, Newcastle and Coventry have given the green light to sign Tomori, with the defender’s departure from Milan now looking inevitable.

He has only one year left on his current contract, making it a bargain price. It will be up to the two Premier League clubs to turn that interest into an offer.

As a centre-back partnership, Tomori and Chiau could give Newcastle the best combination, as Sven Botman and Fabian Schaal were always together. The Milan man will bring a wealth of experience and tackling success that Thiau lacks, while the Newcastle man will maintain a high level of success in duels.

Tomori has a long way to go before he becomes a Premier League player again, but a move away from Milan is certainly on the cards this summer.
