Look, I understand.
The changes in professional golf in the LIV era are as interesting, albeit frequent, as defecation.
I know that because I too have felt giddy when I saw a headline that captured “.”Latest changes“I get it, because I too have wondered when and how much I should care about small changes in corporate governance or marketing budgets. I also feel vaguely irritated by the fact that this news cycle unfolds in a thousand tiny trickles rather than a single, steady stream of information.”

As a reporter, it’s my job to care about these things – and I That’s how I felt. I can only imagine where it will go you.
But some changes in golf are important not for what they are, but for what they represent. That’s the category into which the two changes introduced Tuesday morning fit the golf world. This is an expansion of the PGA Tour’s strategic partnership with the DP World Tour and the Asian Tour. The LPGA then made the decision to hold the event at Nanea, considered the best golf course on the Big Island.
These changes, or perhaps more precisely, acquisitionit’s not just a change in the way we look at the golf calendar. These represent two seismic shifts in the way the professional golf business operates. As educated, intelligent, and literate golf fans, these changes can be very important to our perception of the sport around us. So let’s discuss each of these changes and what they mean.
1. Strategic “strategic alliance”
The PGA Tour has made a number of very precise moves since new CEO Brian Rolup took over. Develop a new competitive schedule. The decision to expose sponsor exemptions to the light of day.

But nothing may be more strategic than the move announced Tuesday morning. That is the tour’s decision to begin a new “strategic partnership” with the DP World Tour and Asian Tour until 2029.
Eagle-eyed golf fans will remember that the tour’s decision to partner with the DP World Tour prior to the launch of LIV was at least partially responsible for saving their bacon. With the DPWT back on its side in 2021, the PGA Tour will be confident that the DPWT will not partner with LIV, creating an International Super League that threatens to forever divide the balance of power in modern professional golf. Under the agreement, the tour may also seek to expand its international footprint and domestic talent pool without participating in any LIV bidding wars. Win-win-win.
This original agreement will soon expire, so Toole will need to negotiate new terms with DPWT to ensure the continuation of the Roosevelt-Churchill partnership. But there’s some trepidation about how things will play out, especially now that the tour is safely in the Truman era. (I’m not sure about the decision to cast Jay Monaghan in the role of FDR in this trope, but I’ll leave it at that.)
Tuesday’s announcement does not extend DPWT’s partnership; new It’s a partnership where both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour are held at the same time. The new agreement also includes a partnership with Asian Tour, which previously partnered with LIV. While this partnership certainly has benefits for the Asian Tour (i.e. money and a path to the PGA Tour), the most beneficial one is the PGA Tour, which can now claim absolute world domination over LIV.

LIV is currently actively seeking funding, but is also facing serious financial jeopardy if it does not raise funds soon. The Asian Tour was thought to be at least an important part of those negotiations. The tour decision adds what can only be described as Ali’s haymaker to his current repertoire of jabs and hooks against his struggling rivals.
but, largely What’s interesting about this move actually has little to do with LIV. I mean the tour probably didn’t need to do that. Even before Tuesday’s announcement, LIV was already deeply scarred and facing an uphill battle over its long-term solvency. The PGA Tour already held all the cards.
Still, Tuesday’s announcement suggested that Mr. Rolup was not satisfied with the results. He didn’t just want to win the fight. He was hoping to win by knockout. He didn’t want to see LIV fall. He wanted to make sure he was pushing them away.
Tourists will say they are only acting in their own self-interest. And they are. Coincidentally, their interests align with killing LIV and all its descendants.

2. New Hawaiian Swing

Not to be outdone by Lollup’s offensive actions, LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler also made waves Tuesday morning.
Kessler and his tour announced that the LPGA will head to Hawaii to host the first event of its kind in the spring of 2027 at Nanea, considered by many to be the best course in the Hawaiian Islands.
There’s a lot we don’t know about the so-called Nanea Cup, but there’s one thing we do. This represents a brilliantly targeted attempt to steal market share directly from under the PGA Tour.

Golf fans will recall that the PGA Tour completely abandoned the “Hawaiian Swing” in the new era, opting instead for tournaments held in the “Lower 48” major metropolitan areas. With the new event, the LPGA is betting (wisely) that it can build something selective and purposeful in a market left behind by the PGA Tour.
But the idea is more than just a big promise. Charles Schwab, Dell and Salesforce are all on board as sponsors of the new event, which will feature 95 LPGA stars competing against the top 25 collegiate players. The new tournament will be held on the same weekend as the Players Championship (but definitely outside of the broadcast time slot), giving the LPGA a chance to draft away from the busy golf weekends. The tournament organizers will then conduct their own drawing. Considered by many to be Hawaii’s top course, Nanea has already established itself as a mecca for women’s golf, hosting the annual Nanea Invitational for the Stanford women’s team.
It’s too early to tell whether the new event will be a success, but it could certainly give LPGA players points for their challenge. The opportunity presented by the Nanea Cup represents exactly the kind of swing that has been sorely missing from the tour for many years, and is a big, bold idea aimed at targeting a golf-obsessed audience and attracting significant television attention.
Of course, such options only appear occasionally. (If it could be done anytime, everyone would already be doing it.) But the Nanea Cup gives tournament organizers a chance to target a new kind of audience. elite Golf course. That sounds like a winning strategy to me, and I (selfishly) hope some of the more open-minded Long Island country clubs continue to be open-minded.
