Announces new sponsor for Silverado event, which will become a championship series in 2028

Shortly after announcing that the Travelers Championship would become a Championship Series event in 2028, the PGA Tour announced the news Tuesday that SOMPO will sponsor the event at California’s Silverado Resort in 2027 before transitioning to a Championship Series event at another course in 2028.

Sources told Golf Digest that the host course will likely be in the Seattle area in 2028. Sahalee Country Club is the clubhouse leader. SOMPO is a global insurance and reinsurance company originating from Japan.

The new deal is being billed as a multi-year partnership, with next year’s full-field event scheduled to take place from July 29th to August 29th. 1 on the North Course of the resort in Napa. There will be no events at Silverado this fall, as there was in 2025, when world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler won in his final start before heading to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

“Just weeks after announcing our new competition model, we are pleased to welcome SOMPO as our first new sponsor to support the PGA Tour Championship Series starting in 2028,” said Dhruv Prasad, PGA Tour Chief Commercial Officer. “We look forward to debuting this partnership in Napa in 2027 and look forward to announcing the future home of the PGA Tour’s new market in the coming months.”

PGA Tour Commissioner Brian Rolup announced last month that the 2028 Championship Series will feature 23 to 24 events, including The Players, Majors, Postseason and Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup. It starts in February and ends in August.

Only Travelers and Sompo have been announced. The 2027 SOMPO event will be broadcast on CBS and Golf Channel.
