Mauricio Pochettino announced on Monday that he intends to bring together a blend of seasoned players and newcomers for his inaugural U.S. national team camp, which follows the team’s exit in the World Cup’s round of 16. This four-match home series will commence later this month.
Pochettino, who secured a new contract lasting until the 2030 World Cup, will reveal a squad of around 26 players on September 17. The matches will take place against Peru on September 26 in Orlando, Chile on September 29 in St. Louis, Mexico on October 3 in Greater Phoenix, and Canada on October 6 in St. Paul.
During a video conference with select reporters from his home in London, Pochettino stated, “Our focus must not only be on the present but also on future aspirations towards 2030.” He highlighted the significance of evaluating various players.
He reiterated that “the aim is the 2030 World Cup,” emphasizing the necessity to start the groundwork now. According to him, the 16-day camp represents a chance to evaluate players who could possibly be part of this four-year journey, aiming for them to be in peak condition for 2030.
Pochettino seeks to create a harmonious blend of experienced athletes and youngsters who can handle the pressures of competing at a high level. He acknowledged, “We need to work for the present to ensure we win games; competitiveness is crucial. However, this is a different approach compared to the previous period, and we need to establish a fresh start.”
When asked about specific players, Pochettino mentioned Noahkai Banks, a talented center back for Augsburg in the Bundesliga, who is still undecided on playing for the U.S. or Germany. He noted that the U.S. Soccer Federation is engaging with all dual nationals, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a personal connection.
Regarding the upcoming camp, important players like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Folarin Balogun may not be selected due to injuries. Pochettino indicated that he might let players who recently transferred from Major League Soccer, such as Sebastian Berhalter and Max Arfsten, stay with their clubs to aid their transition.
He also mentioned he would approach integrating young talents with caution, ensuring not to rush them into the national team setup. For example, Zavier Gozo, a 19-year-old winger who recently joined Crystal Palace, might fall into this careful category.
Pochettino expressed, “We are thrilled about our potential young players, but it’s vital to be cautious. While confidence in their abilities is essential, we need to maintain balance, as overexposure can be detrimental to their careers.”
Additionally, as preparations for the 2028 Olympics unfold, Pochettino is collaborating closely with men’s coach Steve Cherundolo to provide these young athletes with vital senior-level experience ahead of the tournament.
Achieving an Olympic gold medal at home is “an objective for our federation and the nation,” he asserted, adding that it’s crucial to provide players whom Cherundolo identifies as valuable with international exposure.
Pochettino previously capped 62 players across his 31 matches, with five making it onto the World Cup roster. He mentioned that several players who missed the World Cup are still in contention, potentially opening opportunities for midfielders Aidan Morris, Tanner Tessmann, Yunus Musah, and Diego Luna, along with Johnny Cardoso, who missed out due to an injury.
He also acknowledged that he has yet to discuss Balogun’s recent transfer situation but plans to reach out in the coming days to understand what transpired regarding his move from Ligue 1 to the Premier League.
With a full cycle leading up to the 2030 World Cup, Pochettino has plenty of time to shape the team and cultivate the desired mentality. Since his hiring in the fall of 2024, he has made changes, but understands that adjustments to the team’s culture must now deepen.
He remarked, “We’ve altered many habits leading up to the World Cup, but now it’s critical to reinforce this change. We need to foster a team of professionals who are ready to compete at the level we expect.”
When pressed about breaking old habits, he stated, “I’m addressing everything. It’s essential we align on principles and concepts necessary for us to be competitive at all times.”
After the four friendlies, the U.S. squad will participate in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals, both home and away in November. Should they progress, they would enter the semifinals in March at SoFi Stadium in Greater Los Angeles.
Looking ahead, Pochettino said, “Preparing for the 2030 World Cup is a significant task. This is a completely different challenge than when we first arrived two years ago. However, it’s an exciting opportunity to work together on developing young talents into mature players.”
Fan Take: This news is crucial for soccer enthusiasts as it marks a pivotal moment for the U.S. national team, focusing on blending youth and experience. The strategic approach Pochettino is implementing could lead to a stronger team not only for future World Cups but also for immediate competitions, harnessing talent and fostering resilience in upcoming stars.
