Pennsylvania-based Heavy Pour dominated from start to finish to capture the $175,000 Vigil Stakes (G3) on Saturday at Woodbine. Piloted by Gaddiel Martinez, the 5-year-old chestnut gelding quickly broke from post 8 and immediately took command in the seven-furlong sprint on the main synthetic track for horses aged three and up.
Martinez guided the white-blinkered son of Stormy Atlantic to set a swift opening quarter in :22.32, with Piper’s Factor, Souped Up, and Wagstaff chasing closely behind. Further back were Twin City, Notorious Gangster, and Mansetti, while outsider Baytown Dreamer brought up the rear.
Entering the turn, Heavy Pour maintained a comfortable lead at the half-mile mark in :44.68. As they approached the homestretch, Souped Up challenged from the outside, with 35-1 longshot Wagstaff pressing on the rail. Passing the eighth pole with six furlongs covered in 1:09.12, Heavy Pour showed renewed energy, holding off a late surge by reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Mansetti down the middle of the track. In the final stretch, Martinez urged on the Tim Girten-trained gelding, who sealed the victory by a clear length in a final time of 1:22.06.
Mansetti finished second, Wagstaff took third, and second favorite Piper’s Factor came in fourth. The race favorite, Notorious Gangster, never factored and finished seventh.
Bred in Pennsylvania by Richard Bosshard, Heavy Pour earned his first graded stakes triumph and extended his winning streak to four, with three of those wins ridden by Martinez. Based at Presque Isle Downs and out of Charm the Crowd by Theatrical (IRE), Heavy Pour now boasts a record of 8 wins, 3 seconds, and 2 thirds from 23 starts. This marked his first victory at seven furlongs in only his second attempt at the distance, and improved his synthetic track record to 8-3-2 from 18 outings.
Initially listed at 10-1, Heavy Pour went off at 13-1 odds and paid $29.30 on the win.
