Ex-Duck Poised to Propel Oilers Toward Stanley Cup Final Dream

Since joining the Edmonton Oilers in June 2019 after being acquired from the Anaheim Ducks, Corey Perry has appeared in five of the last six Stanley Cup Finals with multiple teams, including the Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, and now the Oilers. He is just one more Stanley Cup title away from having been part of six finals over the last seven years.

During the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Oilers only suffered two losses, both initially trailing 2-0 against the Los Angeles Kings in the first round before rallying to win four straight games. They then defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in five games and overcame an opening loss to the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Finals by winning three consecutive games. Perry scored a crucial power-play goal in Game 4 of that series.

An NHL spokesperson noted that Perry’s sixth playoff goal this season ties him for the most goals scored in a single postseason by players over 39 years old, matching legends like Teemu Selanne, Mark Recchi, Ron Francis, and Jean Béliveau. Perry also joined an elite group by scoring 60 career playoff goals, alongside stars such as Alexander Ovechkin (77), Sidney Crosby (71), Evgeni Malkin (67), and Brad Marchand (60).

Reflecting on the game, Perry told reporters, “We found a way to put it on the line after (Dallas tied it up), and the power play clicked tonight.” Having turned 40 just two weeks ago, Perry continues to be a key contributor, doubling his point total from last year’s playoffs and matching his previous two postseason performances. Most of his ice time this season was spent alongside Leon Draisaitl and Oilers captain Conor McDavid, with the trio dominating opponents by a significant margin.

Known as the Oilers’ big playoff X-factor, Perry is a cornerstone of their power play, often positioned near the crease to disrupt goalies. His points in Game 4’s victory came during the power play.

It has been 18 years since Perry won his first and only Stanley Cup. Though he has come close several times since, the Oilers are determined to give him another chance to hoist the Stanley Cup once more.

Fan Take: Corey Perry’s continued impact in the playoffs, especially at 40, shows the value of veteran leadership and resilience in hockey. His presence not only boosts the Oilers’ championship hopes but also inspires players and fans, proving that experience and skill remain vital in the game’s highest-pressure moments.
