Sean Kemp, a former NBA star, pleaded guilty to assault charges related to a shooting incident that occurred in March 2023 at a mall parking lot in Washington state. The 55-year-old Kemp admitted to second-degree assault in Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma as part of a plea deal, following an incident where two men were shot inside a car and another vehicle was damaged. Although initially charged with first-degree assault with firearm enhancements, Kemp also faced additional assault and drive-by shooting charges, which could have resulted in a lengthy prison sentence.

Sentencing is scheduled for August, with Deputy Prosecutor Thomas Howe recommending a nine-month prison term, followed by a year of supervised probation and restitution payments. Kemp, known as a six-time NBA All-Star and a player for the Seattle Supersonics from 1989 to 1997, declined to comment. His attorney stated that Kemp is committed to moving forward positively and acknowledged that self-defense played a role in the incident.

Court documents reveal that the shooting occurred after Kemp’s truck broke down near a concert venue. Kemp tracked and confronted the driver of a Toyota 4Runner who allegedly had some of Kemp’s belongings and had been circling a parking lot. The confrontation escalated when the person in the back seat of the vehicle fired a shot using Kemp’s handgun, prompting Kemp to return fire in an attempt to disable the vehicle. No injuries were reported. Witnesses confirmed hearing gunfire from both parties, and police later found an empty holster in the abandoned vehicle but no firearms.

As part of the plea deal, Kemp is prohibited from possessing firearms and must provide a DNA sample for law enforcement databases. Kemp made his NBA debut in the 1989-90 season at age 20, rising to fame with his athletic dunks while playing for teams including the Seattle Supersonics, Cleveland, Portland, and Orlando.
