This race promises to be competitive. Billy Loughnane, who is targeting the championship title, switches from Southwell winner Kiani King to ride Marsh Benham, the impressive five-length winner at Epsom last Thursday. Marsh Benham is also a winner at this course and distance and could perform well again if this race doesn’t come too soon.
Other Considerations
My top pick, however, is Jane Chapple-Hyam’s Mertoun. Earlier this season, he won decisively over the same track and distance with Rossa Ryan aboard, who is set to ride him again today. Though Mertoun hasn’t advanced in recent outings at Newmarket, his performances have still been respectable. Purchased for 100,000 guineas as a yearling, he is the first foal of Dubious Affair, a multiple Class 2 winner. Returning to a familiar course and distance should suit Mertoun, who remains capable of improvement.

Andrew Balding’s King Of Berkshire finished third over this course and distance earlier, but he has shown progress over longer distances since. That race was run at a slow pace, and he is likely to get a more aggressive ride to capitalize on his stamina this time. Despite the earlier defeat, he stands out as an improving three-year-old dropping down in class after placing second in a Class 3 handicap at Ascot over 1m 4f.
