A trainer connected to five horses involved in recent races under investigation was charged on Thursday for a violation related to a prohibited substance. The Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU) filed a presence violation against trainer Angel Quiroz after a test conducted on July 10 at Maryland’s Fair Hill Training center detected albuterol, a banned drug, in the horse Bonita Rough.
Quiroz was informed of the positive result and chose not to pursue retesting or offer an adequate explanation, according to HIWU. He retains the right to request a hearing before an impartial arbitrator. Attempts to reach Quiroz for comment were unsuccessful.
Notably, Bonita Rough was not one of the horses under investigation by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) from races held last Sunday in New Jersey and New York. The inquiry centers on five horses—three at Saratoga Race Course in New York and two at Monmouth Park in New Jersey—that attracted unusual betting activity. These horses had all recently returned to racing after long breaks and had trained at Fair Hill before Sunday’s events. Despite being considered long shots, four of the five horses secured wins.
Quiroz was the official trainer for three of these horses and acknowledged to Thoroughbred Daily News that he had assisted with two other winners. According to various sources, bookies in the U.S., U.K., and Latin America noticed irregular betting patterns surrounding these horses.
HIWU stated that all winning horses from the Sunday races underwent testing, and any further results concerning Quiroz’s other horses will be announced following the Anti-Doping and Medication Control Program’s policies.
