As the WNBA regular season resumes following the FIBA World Cup break, the competition for both the championship and MVP heats back up. However, one of the most intriguing battles is for the Most Improved Player award, featuring two strong contenders from the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun.
Currently fifth in the WNBA standings with a 26-14 record, the Indiana Fever have endorsed Makayla Timpson for the honor. The team recently promoted her progress via a campaign video on X, emphasizing the 23-year-old forward’s notable development this season.
“Makayla Timpson for Most Improved Player,” the Fever tweeted. “She’s posting career highs with 5.5 points per game, shooting 63.6% from the field, and grabbing 4.9 rebounds per game in her sophomore year.”
Drafted 19th overall by Indiana in the 2025 WNBA Draft, Timpson saw limited court time during her rookie year, averaging just 7.1 minutes per game and even less in the playoffs. This season, however, the 6-foot-2 forward has become a dependable element in coach Stephanie White’s rotation.
In August, Timpson earned a spot in Indiana’s starting lineup, and the starting five including her has produced a +22.1 net rating over 129 minutes. She’s also found scoring consistency, reaching double-digit points in five of her last six games.
Her speed and versatility have added a new dynamic to the Fever’s frontcourt. Timpson has played at least 19 minutes in each of Indiana’s last 10 games, ranking sixth in team minutes. After a loss to the Minnesota Lynx on August 2, head coach Stephanie White praised Timpson’s growth and impact on defense and overall play.
“Makayla’s been huge for us,” White said. “Her defensive versatility at the post, her athleticism – she’s grown every game. She knows her role, plays within herself, and she’s going to keep getting better.”
Timpson’s stats this year—5.5 points, 4.9 rebounds per game, with a 63.6% shooting percentage—show marked improvement from her rookie numbers of 2.6 points and 1.8 rebounds on 56.1% shooting. This leap solidifies Indiana’s argument for Timpson as a top Most Improved Player candidate.
On the other side, the Connecticut Sun advocate for Olivia Nelson-Ododa, a 26-year-old veteran making significant strides in her fourth season. The former UConn star is delivering career-best averages: 10 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 0.8 steals per game, while shooting 56.9% from the field. She’s also become a regular offensive contributor, averaging 21.4 minutes across 32 contests.
Nelson-Ododa’s impact has been especially evident in recent weeks, with back-to-back double-doubles against the New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks in mid-August. Although sidelined currently by a right knee injury, she is expected to return when the season resumes on September 17.
The Sun shared a “BEHIND THE EXHIBIT” video on X, offering fans an inside look at Nelson-Ododa’s growth and work behind the scenes.
With both teams backing their standout players, the Most Improved Player title race is far from a clear-cut decision. Beyond Timpson and Nelson-Ododa, several others have made compelling cases, setting the stage for a competitive and unpredictable finish to the regular season.
The fight for Most Improved Player is gaining momentum, promising fans an exciting watch as players push themselves to new heights.
Fan Take: This development is thrilling for WNBA enthusiasts as it highlights the league’s rising talent and deepening competitiveness. Recognizing and celebrating players’ growth like Timpson’s and Nelson-Ododa’s not only elevates the sport but also inspires future athletes to reach their potential.
