Fifty soccer fans celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League victory were hospitalized on Monday after a 53-year-old man drove into the crowd during the team’s title parade in Liverpool, England, according to authorities.

Merseyside police reported that they received calls regarding a vehicle colliding with multiple pedestrians on Water Street. The driver has since been arrested.

At a press conference later that night, the Northwest Ambulance Service stated that 27 individuals sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals, with two of those—including a child—suffering serious injuries. By Tuesday morning, police confirmed that the total number of hospitalized individuals had risen to 50.

As of Wednesday, seven victims were still in stable condition in the hospital, as reported by Merseyside police. Additionally, the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service revealed that four people, including one child, were trapped beneath the vehicle and had to be freed by emergency crews. Paramedics attending to the parade were also struck by the vehicle but were unharmed.

According to police, the incident was first reported at 6 PM local time as the parade came to an end. Authorities are treating this as an "isolated incident" and do not consider it an act of terrorism, with no further suspects being sought.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene to assist the injured, and inflatable tents were set up for triage. Merseyside police noted they would provide more updates soon.

Liverpool FC expressed their condolences and support for the victims, stating their thoughts and prayers are with those affected. LeBron James, a prominent part-owner of the club, took to social media to call the incident "senseless."

Fans gathered in large numbers to celebrate Liverpool’s Premier League win, officially achieved on Sunday with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace. The team clinched the title after a victory over Tottenham in April but received the trophy only recently.

This marked Liverpool’s first Premier League title since the 2019-2020 season and their 20th overall in franchise history. The celebratory parade coincided with a public holiday in the UK, with the club anticipating around 1 million attendees.

Fan Take: This incident underscores the passionate connection fans have with their teams, highlighting the immense joy and celebration surrounding sports events. It’s a stark reminder that while fandom can bring communities together, safety must always be a priority at large gatherings, shaping how soccer events are organized in the future.
