Golden Tempo, a dual Classic winner, will train at Keeneland as he prepares for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, according to the Daily Racing Form. The horse, trained by Cherie DeVaux, has returned to Keeneland and is expected to resume jogging next week after finishing third in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga on August 29.
This upcoming 1 ¼-mile Breeders’ Cup Classic will mark Golden Tempo’s first competition against older horses. DeVaux shared with DRF that the colt continues to show improvement across every measure but will need to make a significant leap to succeed at this level.
Golden Tempo has consistently placed in all seven races throughout his career. He made a dramatic debut with a last-to-first win in a six-furlong sprint at Fair Grounds during his juvenile season. He then won the G3 Lecomte Stakes in January and placed third in both the G2 Risen Star and G2 Louisiana Derby. Following these, he closed from behind to win the Kentucky Derby and then captured the Belmont Stakes.
Bred in Kentucky and owned by Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable, Golden Tempo is by Curlin and out of the graded stakes winner Carrumba, by Bernardini.
Additionally, Englishman, another of DeVaux’s charges who has won the G1 Woody Stephens and G1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial, is also based at Keeneland and will train for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, per DRF.
