A total of 45 horses are set to compete across six races marking the start of the Monmouth at Meadowlands meet this Friday as the specialized all-turf event kicks off. The first race is scheduled to post at 7 p.m.
This nine-weekend meet, running on Fridays and Saturdays from September 18 through October 16, features six-race cards each day. The opening-day lineup includes four races at 1 1/16 miles and two maiden sprints covering five furlongs.
One of the maiden sprints, a $40,000 purse race for New Jersey-bred 2-year-olds, goes as the second race. It will be followed immediately by a $34,000 filly and mare maiden event. The Pick 6 wager covers all the races on the card.
Luis Rivera, Jr., who recently finished second in the jockey standings at Monmouth Park, will ride in all six races. Charlie Marquez, who was third in those standings, has four mounts scheduled. Trainer Jorge Delgado, fresh off his second consecutive Monmouth Park training championship, has entered Taraj in race four.
