The University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program (RTIP) has posthumously honored Charles E. “Chuck” Simon with the 2026 John K. Goodman Alumni Award, celebrating his significant contributions to Thoroughbred racing and the enduring influence he had on those he mentored. A proud RTIP graduate, Simon was highly regarded in the racing community for his exceptional training skills, deep knowledge of horses and the industry, generosity, and eagerness to support others. In 2026, two individuals he guided, Cherie DeVaux and Chad Summers, won the three legs of racing’s prestigious Triple Crown. Their victories highlight the broader impact Simon had on the racing world through the many people he inspired and uplifted.
“Chuck Simon appreciated that one of the greatest contributions you can make in racing is helping those who come after you,” said Robert Hartman, Chair of the Race Track Industry Program. “The success Cherie and Chad have reached this year powerfully illustrates the lasting effect Chuck had on those around him.”
The John K. Goodman Alumni Award is given annually to an RTIP graduate who has distinguished themselves by professional achievements, dedicated service to the racing industry, and a strong commitment to fostering the growth of people and organizations essential to the sport’s success. This award honors John K. Goodman, a founding figure of the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program, who was passionate about preparing future racing professionals and connecting students with key experiences and mentors. “John Goodman valued the importance of providing opportunities for learning and development,” added Hartman. “Chuck Simon embodied that same spirit throughout his career in racing. It is deeply meaningful to honor Chuck with an award bearing John’s name.”
Simon will be formally recognized at the 2026 Global Symposium on Racing awards luncheon on Tuesday, December 8, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort.
