NEW YORK – Rich Chou isn’t one to keep secrets, but this time he had to hold back some exciting news. Returning to matchmaking after years in entrepreneurship and management, Chou is now a leading figure in Ki MMA, which officially launched this Monday.
Chou, who previously worked with Strikeforce and Bellator, steps back into the MMA scene fully aware of the significant challenge ahead, particularly with Ki MMA’s bold plan to feature a 32-fighter featherweight grand prix as part of their debut lineup.
“Next year might be the toughest year of my life,” Chou told MMA Junkie following the Ki MMA launch event. “There are 32 fighters in the tournament, plus alternates, spanning four continents. The tournament format brings inherent chaos. We know it won’t be flawless, but we’re preparing for it. It’s about having the right fighters involved. Occasionally, you get this beautiful chaos — like Daniel Cormier coming in as the second alternate and seizing his moment. Sometimes you witness perfect endings, like A.J. McKee winning the Bellator featherweight grand prix on home turf in LA. We’ve seen both the highs and lows, and now we’re ready.”
The grand prix will feature eight fighters from each of four continents: North America, South America, Asia, and Europe. The spotlight will be on young, rising featherweights eager to prove themselves on a global platform.
“This is a youth movement,” Chou said. “Young, exciting featherweights represent the future of the sport. That’s something I wanted to emphasize personally as the matchmaker and talent relations lead.”
While the focus is clearly on cultivating new talent, Chou and promoter Scott Coker also remain committed to traditional veteran matchups. The MMA market is limited, and Chou encourages fighters at all stages of their careers to explore what Ki MMA has to offer.
“If you’re a free agent, you should look into your options and test the waters,” Chou said. “History has shown through Strikeforce and Bellator that we invest heavily in free agency and aren’t afraid to shake things up. Scott mentioned an eight-figure fund dedicated to free agents.”
“Many fighters have felt it wasn’t worth testing their options in the current MMA landscape. We want to change that perception, shake things up, and make fighters realize Ki MMA is a serious opportunity. It’s going to be a lively conversation on both sides.”
Ki MMA plans to officially launch in early 2027 and intends to host events worldwide throughout the following year.
