Astros’ Pitching Depth Shrinks Further as Ronel Blanco Faces Tommy John Surgery

Houston Astros right-handed pitcher Ronell Blanco is set to undergo Tommy John surgery, which will be announced next week. The 31-year-old had a 3-4 record with a 4.10 ERA in nine appearances before his injury. The team revealed this news on Wednesday after receiving a second medical opinion. Blanco was placed on the injured list last week due to an inflamed elbow, shortly after his last start on May 17th.

Manager Joe Espada expressed sympathy for Blanco, acknowledging his hard work and emphasizing the focus on his recovery and eventual return next season. Blanco becomes the second Astros starting pitcher this month to require Tommy John surgery, following the announcement that right-hander Hayden Wesneski also needs the procedure.

Espada noted that this period is challenging for the Astros, especially with other key pitchers like Spencer Alligetty sidelined since April due to a broken thumb, as well as Luis Garcia and Christian Javier being unavailable. Despite these setbacks, Espada is encouraging the team to stay focused and support each other.

The Astros have had to adapt by rotating through 10 different pitchers in 54 games this season. Their current rotation includes Hunter Brown, who leads Major League Baseball with seven wins and maintains a 2.00 ERA over 11 starts, alongside two-time All-Star Jose Urquidy. Veteran Lance McCullers Jr. has struggled with a 0-1 record and a 6.57 ERA in four starts, returning from flexor tendon surgery.

The team has also relied on rookies Ryan Gusto, who holds a 3-2 record in six starts, and Colton Gordon, who has pitched 14.1 innings in three starts but has yet to record a win or loss.
