John Hedges honored the memory of his late trainer, Ricky Hatton, by wearing a T-shirt featuring images of Hatton during the weigh-in for his upcoming fight against Pat Brown in Manchester. Hatton, a former two-weight world champion, passed away at his Manchester home in September 2025 at the age of 46.
Known as the ‘Hitman,’ Hatton transitioned to coaching after retiring in 2012, and Hedges worked closely with him, having Hatton in his corner when he won the English cruiserweight title in May 2025. Essex native Hedges, 24, faced boos from the crowd at Manchester’s New Century Hall, as most fans were supporting their local fighter, Brown. However, Hedges, gesturing to the images of Hatton on his shirt, said he was unaffected by the hostile reaction.
“This isn’t a hostile atmosphere, it’s just part of the sport for me,” Hedges said. “I’ve boxed at a high amateur level, so I’m used to this. Pat knows the game and where I’ve come from – this is nothing new. I’m grateful to be here, but this environment is familiar.”
Hedges remains undefeated in 12 professional bouts and will challenge Brown, who has won all six of his fights by knockout, for the vacant British and Commonwealth cruiserweight titles. Originally scheduled for Planet Ice in Altrincham, the fight was moved to the larger Co-op Live arena due to high ticket demand. Promoter Eddie Hearn told IFL TV he expected around 5,000 fans to attend.
Brown, a 2024 Olympian for Team GB, enjoys strong support in Manchester and was greeted by chants of “Oh, Patrick the Bomber,” referring to his nickname. Though composed in media appearances during the week, Brown showed fierce intensity after the weigh-in, with both fighters landing on 14st 3lb (90kg).
“This is what I was born to do,” Brown stated. “My dad took me to the gym when I was seven, and ever since, this has been my destiny.”
