Max Verstappen humorously remarked that he might eventually have to give up his Formula 1 seat to Robin Raikkonen, the newly signed Red Bull junior driver. Robin, the 11-year-old son of 2007 F1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, has been brought into Red Bull’s driver development program.
Known as ‘Ace,’ the young Finnish talent has already shown impressive form in karting competitions and is set to officially join Red Bull’s junior driver lineup in 2027. Verstappen, a four-time world champion under contract until 2030, playfully hinted that Robin could be targeting his seat sooner or later.
“I met them before the race on Sunday [at the Italian Grand Prix]. They were seated upstairs, so I had a quick chat with Kimi and Robin,” Verstappen shared. “It was nice. I knew Robin was already signed; it’s great to see.” When asked if he might no longer be racing by the time Robin reaches F1, the 28-year-old replied with a grin, “Yeah, who knows. Maybe, maybe not. Eventually, they’ll need a seat for him in the team, so maybe I’ll have to move aside.”
Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies praised Robin’s outstanding karting skills, stating, “His speed, racecraft, and natural talent have made him one of the most promising young drivers in his age group.” Mekies added, “He also impresses with his maturity, calm attitude, and clear focus on driving. Our aim is to develop him carefully, without adding unnecessary pressure. Motorsport is a long journey, and we will provide him with the time, support, and resources needed to reach his full potential.”
Red Bull hopes Robin will follow in the footsteps of his legendary father, Kimi Raikkonen, who secured 21 wins and 103 podiums over 349 F1 races before retiring in 2021.
